Batman: Arkham City

Batman and Gotham City share a special connection. On the rooftops, it’s as if the Dark Knight is connected to the soul of the city. He knows every alleyway, every criminal safe haven, every trouble spot. Trapped in Arkham Asylum last game, Batman was disconnected from the city that speaks to him. In Arkham City, Batman is in his element. This isn’t Batman trapped in an asylum; this is a city full of criminals trapped with Batman.

Arkham City is a section of Gotham run by Warden Hugo Strange where the inmates of Arkham Asylum and Blackgate prison have been placed. The major criminals have secured their own districts and run them with some autonomy. To ensure gamers feel like Batman at his best, the city is wide open from the start. Each district has its own set of missions, its own narratives to experience. Go where you’re needed and unravel the clues to the larger plot and Hugo Strange’s true motivations.

Batman starts out strong, with the gadgets he needs. His grappling hook, cryptographic sequencer, Bat Claw, remote-controlled Batarang and more. These items can be upgraded, but you don’t begin Arkham City stripped down. Far from it. Arkham City is a large open city and Batman is ready to take full advantage of familiar ground.

Probably the two most crucial pieces of equipment are his cape and the grappling hook. Gliding is a major part of Arkham City, with Bats making use of momentum to adjust his speed. Couple this with the grappling hook and Bats can easily get around the city. He can grab onto billboards, the sides of buildings, even the legs of patrol choppers. Movement was fairly limited in Arkham Asylum, but the city is a very different story. This is Batman’s city and he’s developed these tools over the years to best take advantage of Gotham’s architecture.

The city is quite a sight. It’s a gritty underworld filled with seedy bars, dark alleys, and danger around every corner. Though I only saw Two-Face’s district, the sense of scale in Arkham City’s impressive. The game world’s five times the size of Arkham Asylum, but more importantly, it has vitality and a sense of life. It’s worn down but seems brimming with activity.

It’s amazing to view, but there is one downside. Detective Mode is not only back, but it appears far more crucial this time around. In the span of 20 minutes, there must have been a half-dozen occasions where Detective Mode wasn’t just helpful but necessary. Hidden Riddler clues, tucked away criminal, armed guards and so on. I’m really excited for a fully powered Batman to take on an entire city’s worth of criminals, but not if I am watching the world through x-ray goggles most of the time.

It sucks to have Batman being such a badass right from the start — punching through walls, diving from the air and landing with his hand around an enemy’s throat, disarming an thug and cracking their head with their own bat — only to see him relying on the same old Detective Mode crutch.

Detective Mode complaints aside, there are some welcome upgrades for Batman’s tools of the trade. This includes the Cryptographic Sequencer, which pops up a small holographic panel above Batman’s arm. Batman can then locate signals across the city and hack into them, listening in on what the armed militia or others are up to.

Combat plays out much like in Arkham Asylum, with Batman fluidly chaining attacks between large groups of enemies. But he has more tricks up his sleeve. The Bat Claw can grab and zip baddies towards Batman’s waiting fist, new silent takedowns allow for impressive sleeper hold moves, and there’s just a higher level of brutality to Batman’s combos.

This is the Dark Knight as I imagined him. As a big Batman fan (I own around 200 Batman graphic novels — yes, nerd) I have a pretty critical eye to all things involving the Dark Knight. 2009′s Arkham Asylum was a good start, but this Batman seems more like the one I knew and loved for years in the comics. And this is his Gotham, on the verge of collapse but someone remaining solvent seemingly by the force of Batman’s willpower.

Batman’s Rogue’s Gallery is as important to his identity as Gotham. His psyche is as linked to the criminals as it is to the city they seem so desperate to destroy. The more they escalate their activities, the harsher Batman’s response. And things seem to have gone to extremes in Arkham City. Two-Face tries to dump Catwoman in a vat of acid at a dilapidated courthouse and Joker nearly blows up Batman. That’s in the first chapter of Arkham City. The bad guys are playing for keeps but so is Batman.

Despite the heightened stakes, there is some evidence that the fun little Easter Eggs that brought Akrham Asylum to life are also in Batman’s newest adventure. Early on, Batman finds a babbling Calendar Man locked in a cell. He’s murmuring about St. Patrick’s Day and a crime he committed, but he won’t give details. As it turns out, if you return on St. Patrick’s Day (in real life, not in the game world), Calendar Man will give vivid details on his crime’s from that day. Each holiday has a story for those who want to revisit Calendar Man throughout the year.

It’s these little details that can make for a special experience. I don’t know how many of these little touches exist throughout the city, but if Calendar Man is just one small example, then Batman: Arkham City is going to be a real treat for Bat-Fantatics.

I’ve always wondered why anyone would live in a city home to the criminally insane — people who shoot up the neighborhoods, poison the water, and set off massive explosions every other week. But there’s this unspoken contract every citizen has with Batman. They keep the city working, even in the face of madness, and he keeps them safe. This is Batman’s city and he’s come to reclaim it. I can’t wait.

Batman’s Ready to Take Back Arkham City – Xbox 360 Preview at IGN

Also the top 5 facts found out about Batman:AC this morning at the PRE-GDC where there was a playable build…

So it’s been a busy day for Batman: Arkham City, Rocksteady shown off a playable demo to a number of journalists at the recent Microsoft pre-Game Developers Conference showcase and there have been a tonne of previews. We’ve gathered what we think our the five biggest facts revealed today. Enjoy!

A St Patricks Holiday Crime

We’ve known for a while now that Calendar Man will be playing his part in Arkham City using IRL times as a dialogue trigger but the recent GDC preview has given us a glimpse of what exactly he’ll be talking about. It seems a visit to his cell on a holiday will spark a discussion on one of his crimes made that day. The demo saw him mumbling about St. Patrick’s Day and his crime. Now we all know Rocksteady like to tease us with gradual info but this might be taking it too far, check back on March 17th 2012 to find out what Calendar Man really did that day! (Or have a fiddle with your systems date!)

Helicopter Grappling

“Nearby, a helicopter floats over a hotspot in the city. Batman seizes the opportunity to grapple up towards the helicopter and grab onto its landing struts. As the helicopter flies over Arkham City, you can use Batman’s detective vision to look down and find other things to do whether it’s finding more Riddler trophies (specifically designated enemies will reveal trophy locations if you are able to interrogate them) or saving innocent civilians that have somehow found their way into the madhouse.” – Gamespot

New Voice Actors

“Fans of Batman: The Animated Series may be disappointed to hear that neither Richard “Bull from Night Court” Moll nor Adrienne “That Girl From The Fog” Barbeau will be reprising their roles as Two-Face and Catwoman, respectively. Interestingly, Barbeau was in Arkham Asylum, as one of the asylum physicians Batman rescues.

Surprisingly, Arleen Sorkin did not provide the voice for Harley Quinn in the demo we saw, despite being in Arkham Asylum. When pressed, we were given a stone cold “no comment” on whether this would be true in the final game. The actress we heard was a pretty good imitation, but obviously not the real thing.” – 1UP

Answer Distress Signals

It wasn’t only Catwoman that needed saving during the demo playthrough, while exploring the city in detective mode you will occasionally receive a message claiming that a “Person in Distress” has been located. This could possibly be coming from your GCPD dispatch broadcast you now have access to. Accepting the distress call will open up a new quest path.

A GDC Suprise

“The Arkham City team is saving one surprise for Game Developers Conference next week. We don’t know what it is, but we know that it involves radio frequencies. We were shown a hand-painted billboard in the game that provided a clue, and read as follows: Turn on and tune in before someone checks out: 275.00 325.00.” – 1UP

Can the community try and figure out this mysterious clue?

Super Bowl Halftime Blog!

by Ian Cummings 02/06/11 9:02 AM

Hello Madden fans, this is Ian Cummings, creative director, and welcome to our third blog in the tradition of posting news during halftime… I apologize in advance for forcing you to miss a performance by the Black Eyed Peas.

When you’re done with the blog, make sure you listen to the very first Madden NFL 12 developer podcast too! Myself and “Ratings Czar” Donny Moore ring in the new product year with some discussion around the newly announced features (below), and the addition of Walter Payton to Madden Ultimate Team. Download it here.

We wanted to use this blog to take the opportunity to do a few things:
1. Talk specifically about the overall “vision” for Madden NFL 12
2. Introduce you to some new team members
3. Provide a sneak peek at a few additions that are already being worked on

TRUE TO THE GAME
If you’ve been following the development team since we all (re)joined forces back in Madden NFL 10, you probably know that our overall vision for the Franchise has been “Everything You See on Sunday”. I’m happy to report that this vision is still 100% intact for Madden NFL 12, and to be honest it’s more valid than ever. Over these past two years we have been working on many new frameworks and back-end technologies – from presentation to franchise to online – that we feel will really pay major dividends this year.

With that knowledge, we’ve tried to come up with a phrase to help us sell the vision of Madden NFL 12, both internally to the team and externally to the fans. That vision is “True to the Game.” This is our ‘razor’ – a phrase we can always think back about to help us make the tough decisions and choose the correct features, additions, and improvements. We always want to keep everyone on the team focused on the same goal – an authentic representation of simulation NFL football. “True to the Game” also reminds us to pay homage to what established Madden the video game as a significant influence in pop culture that we all know today. This helps renew our focus into all areas in the game, like offline franchise mode, online play, presentation, and the core fundamentals of gameplay and AI – the things that made Madden the must-have game for millions. We want to be 100% recognized as a leader in the sports genre again, and the only way to do that is to improve the game across all major aspects.

LEADERSHIP
The core development team remains largely intact for Madden NFL 12, which again I believe will pay major dividends when it comes to improving core aspects of the game. We have also re-aligned our management structure to have one “General Manager” sitting atop ALL of the football games within EA SPORTS to ensure that both teams are aligned on core technologies and pushing the envelope for innovation. Cam Weber, the executive producer previously in charge of the Fight Night franchise (and former college quarterback), has taken on this role to help Phil Frazier (Madden NFL) and Roy Harvey (NCAA Football) shape the direction of both football franchises for the long term. We’re all excited to have Cam on board and are looking forward to utilizing his football knowledge and expertise to help grow the business.

NEW FEATURES
We have debated internally for weeks trying to decide what we would be the best things to show to you the fans as a “kickoff” to Madden NFL 12. As everyone knows, we are still a LONG way away from shipping the game, and undoubtedly some fans may be expecting major feature announcements even though we just aren’t at that point yet. Remember, WE aren’t even 100% sure what’s going to end up in the game yet. I won an arm-wrestling match and everyone finally agreed to let me release one feature to you, the masses. The caveat is that they wouldn’t let me get any high-res footage because that might give away too much. Anyway, we’re kicking off Madden NFL 12 with a surprise… (no pun intended)

I’ll post the reminder again that this is very early…we know quite well that there are bugs shown in this video.

(quick backstory) For those of you that may not have been following me closely on Twitter or anything, I fiercely debated against this feature for a while with many members of the community. This wasn’t because I didn’t want the feature (as of course it does happen on Sundays), but because I thought frankly that there were just more important tasks to do before we got to it. More importantly, I was worried about the exploitation of the feature online. There were multiple members on the design team that kept bugging me about it because they also wanted the feature in, and we went back and forth for weeks on all the problems it might cause and the time it might cost to implement. After much debate, I just decided to take a look at the code myself and see if I could bite it off. I came in on a Saturday and hacked away, just trying to get some semblance of it working.

This is what I look like working on kickoff code on Saturdays.

After one long day, tons of broken builds, and an animation request from the FIFA team to borrow a new kick animation, it was done!

So by this point, I had obviously changed my tune, and was actually excited to show it off. I brought some gameplay guys over and within five minutes, they were able to recover it 90% of the time. As Larry and Mike’s disappointed scowls struck fear into my heart…

…it occurred to me that after I spent some time re-tuning it, I could actually totally put this worry to rest with a bit of new tech that we will be featuring in Madden NFL 12:

“Tuner Sets”, introduced in the NHL series and brought into NCAA Football last year, are hugely important to the development of sports games in that they allow us to tune and tweak many existing parts of game code without the major delay that comes from a full title update requiring 1st party console manufacturer approvals. A quick addition to my hacked surprise onside kick code made this feature easily tunable post-ship, and thus much safer against any exploits that may crop up. This isn’t the only thing in the tuner sets obviously…we are in the process of moving as many items into these as possible, from gameplay tuning to franchise data to even presentation aspects. We are excited to the possibilities this will open up to our fans in being able to provide live feedback and having us act on it in near real-time. The days of shipping a disc in a box and forgetting about it are long gone, and we want to be at the forefront of blazing new trails in reacting to our audience and improving the game quickly.

Well, that’s it Madden fans. We hope you’ve enjoyed this halftime blog for Madden NFL 12. I would have loved to go into more detail about the improvements and additions to things like franchise mode (some nice big tidbits coming there), online, presentation or many other areas, but alas, it’s only February, and we have a LONG way to go! This is merely a slight taste of what’s to come. In the meantime, feel free to hop over to our official EA forums and talk about these new features. Do you like the addition of the surprise onside kick? How about tuner sets? We are always interested in hearing and reading your feedback.

From here until August you can always stay in the loop of what’s going on behind the scenes with the development team by following me on Twitter at @ian_cummings, or the main Madden NFL account at @EAMaddenNFL. Thanks for tuning in, now enjoy the rest of the Super Bowl!
