Facebook Email is Launching to DESTROY GMail

I guess it is really about to be on between Facebook and Gmail. They are always battling for dominance like the iLone and the eNoli and this is another tactic that Facebook will use to become number one on the net.

Back in February we wrote about Facebook’s secret Project Titan — a web-based email client that we hear is unofficially referred to internally as its “Gmail killer”. Now we’ve heard from sources that this is indeed what’s coming on Monday during Facebook’s special event, alongside personal @facebook.com email addresses for users.

This isn’t a big surprise — the event invites Facebook sent out hinted strongly that the news would have something to do with its Inbox, sparking plenty of speculation that the event could be related to Titan. Our understanding is that this is more than just a UI refresh for Facebook’s existing messaging service with POP access tacked on. Rather, Facebook is building a full-fledged webmail client, and while it may only be in early stages come its launch Monday, there’s a huge amount of potential here.

Facebook has the world’s most popular photos product, the most popular events product, and soon will have a very popular local deals product as well. It can tweak the design of its webmail client to display content from each of these in a seamless fashion (and don’t forget messages from games, or payments via Facebook Credits). And there’s also the social element: Facebook knows who your friends are and how closely you’re connected to them; it can probably do a pretty good job figuring out which personal emails you want to read most and prioritize them accordingly.

Oh, and assuming our sources prove accurate, this explains the timing of the Google/Facebook slap fight over contact information.

Apple Approved Flash Content on the iOS

This App has got the internet going crazy. Skyfire Labs has released their iOS web browser that translates ALL Flash content into a format that the iOS can view. This is not an app, but a browser and is approved by Apple so there is NO hacking involved. The Skyfire Browser was so popular that the $3 App became the App store’s top grossing download. Skyfire had to stop selling it because they could not handle the bandwidth. They are going to increase their bandwidth so they can make it available again in the very near future.

One thing that should be known is that the browser can but does not work with Hulu because they want to charge all mobile users for their content. BOOO!!!!

New Android Phones with 3D Displays

Sharp is releasing the Galapagos 003SH and 005SH phones and they have glasses-free 3D screens. This is not a surprise because sharp is the manufacturer of the screens for the Nintendo 3Ds which does not need 3D Glasses. As long that the 3D is functional and is not annoying this will be great. At the end of the day it seems phones have to try everything they can to compete with the iPhone and even stand out in the flooded mobile phone market. This may be a good attempt, but I am not sure if Sharp is known for their phones.

The Galapagos 003SH is the full touchscreen while the 005SH has the sliding qwetry keyboard. A 1GHz Snapdragon powers Froyo on both, with the 3D-capable displays stretching to 3.8 inches and 800 x 480 resolution. The 003SH also comes with a 9.6 megapixel camera, while the 005SH settles for 8 megapixels, although both are capable of 720p video. There are also bundled 3D content deals in place, such as the one with Capcom that will see Mega Man, Resident Evil and Ghosts ‘n Goblins titles coming preloaded on the handsets. Intrigued? The 003SH is coming to Japan this December, to be followed by the 005SH in February.

The Commuter– HD Film Shot on Cell Phone

I always say that technology is making it possible for anyone to get their stuff out there and look great while doing it. This film is kind of an example of how that can happen. “The Commuter” was done with the support of Nokia and established actors such as Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel and Pam Anderson, but the short film was shot entirely on the Nokia N8 cell phone.

Here is info from Nokia’s official blog:

LONDON, United Kingdom – Monday night saw the theatrical premiere of the latest comedy action film to hit the silver screen, The Commuter, starring Dev Patel, Charles Dance, Ed Westwick and Pamela Anderson. Why do we care? Because the whole thing was shot on the Nokia N8 and gives a great testimony to its film-making prowess. Check out the video after the break.

Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel plays the main character and said that the idea of the film being shot on a mobile phone was his main interest in getting involved in the project. He said: “I’m always interested in embracing new technology in film making and the main reason I really wanted to get involved with ‘The Commuter’ was because it was being shot just on mobile phones.”

“I wanted to encourage the next generation of filmmakers by showing that you don’t need expensive equipment and big budgets to make your own movies. The quality of a camera phone, like the Nokia N8 allows filmmakers to produce amazing HD movies and I hope ‘The Commuter’ shows aspirational filmmakers that you can create a great movie even using a mobile phone.”

Here is a review of the phone:

Sony Playstation Phone

Well, it was rumored and now there are photos of the Playstation phone. It is a Sony Ericsson phone codenamed Zues currently running Android 2.X.  The possibilities are endless. Android is an excellent decision because that will allow the device to have access to all things Android which is constantly being updated and expanded. This device will not come to an end like that game phone system I cannot remember the name of.

I am a bit confused though. Nintendo is the only company that makes money on systems and all other companies make money on the games. So if this is an Android phone there will be tons of Android games for download that will have nothing to do with the Sony. Sure there will be tons of money made but not necessarily from down loadable PSP games. Oh well stay tuned for more info!

BTW this is info on Sony’s official statement on the device:

SCEE’s original statement regarding the device — “These images are definitely fake” — has turned into: “Sony doesn’t comment on rumour or speculation” (as has Sony Ericsson’s statement). When contacted, SCEA counterparts similarly told us, “We do not comment on rumors or speculation.” Unfortunately, suggesting to Sony that the PlayStation Phone doesn’t appear to be either “rumor” or “speculation” didn’t elicit further comment.
